Understanding Global Wealth (Without the Headaches)

HowRichAtlas is an educational simulation designed to translate complex economic concepts into clear, real-world context. We help you see where high-to-low earnings really fall in different countries, adjusting for what simple everyday items actually cost from region to region.

How We Estimate Income Percentiles

📊Why Standard Averages Don't Work

Have you ever heard the saying, "If a billionaire walks into a local diner, everyone inside instantly becomes a millionaire on average"?

Traditional averages (means) paint a misleading picture of society because they get heavily skewed by a tiny handful of ultra-wealthy people. To solve this, economists use **"skewed curve models"** (technically called log-normal models) that accurately map how most people fit into standard middle-income ranges, while a thin line of elite earners rises high at the top.

🔬 For the Math Geeks: View Formula

f(x) = (1 / (x * σ * √2π)) * e^(-(ln x - μ)² / (2σ²))

By tailoring the coefficients μ (median log income) and σ (inequality spread) per nation, we reproduce smooth, continuous distributions matching published demographic brackets.

⚖️Understanding Inequality (Gini index)

Think of the **Gini score** as a country's "gap meter" mapping from 0% to 100%:

  • If everyone made the **exact same wage**, the gap meter is **0%**.
  • If a single person owned **every penny** in the nation, the meter is **100%**.

We feed real world scores (like **41%** in the United States, **49%** in Brazil, and **31%** in Germany) into our engine. This lets us shape the curve differently for each nation so you can see how much faster a good salary vaults you past others in unequal countries compared to equal ones.

💡 What this means: In countries with a wide wealth gap, reaching the top 10% takes less income relative to the median, but reaching the ultra-elite top 1% requires a massive financial leap!
